P enelope Wilton has amassed a global fanbase thanks to Downton Abbey . For decades earlier, she had been rightly adored by theatre-goers wowed by her award-winning stage performances, only was otherwise mostly known to Television set viewers for playing long-suffering wife Ann in the sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles .

Anne is the widow Tonybefriends on cemetery visits, where he finds her sitting pasther late husband's grave.
In their exchanges, Anne tries to reassure Tony that life is all the same worth living.

Penelope was delighted when Ricky tapped her up to play the part.
"I didn't know Ricky, but obviously I knew of his reputation and I liked The Office," she says.
"I like him very much and I like the way he works. He only wants you to practise what he's written and to exercise your best, and he will do his.
"I like playing Anne because she's an interesting, reflective person," she continues.
"She and Tony accept created this friendship that'south kind of true considering she doesn't actually know anything well-nigh him.
"Their human relationship is built just on what they tell each other. I find that fascinating."
"Considering of what they've both been through they have enormous empathy for one another."
"He's realised that she's been through a contempo similar bereavement and that makes him able to open to her."
Near every scene between them is filmed in a cemetery in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
"Our little scenes on the bench are lovely to do, although Ricky is too directing it, so he'due south got 100 things going through his head," she reveals.
Although well-known for Downton, Penelope landed the part because Ricky told her he was a smashing fan of Ever Decreasing Circles.
"He must have been very immature when it was on," says Penelope with a laugh.

"I hadn't seen him for a while because I've been decorated and he doesn't live in London any more, only we were delighted to see one some other at the read-through," she says.
"We'dstayed friends and towards the end of Dickie's [Briers] life we used to get come across him together and have lunch."
There were lots of laughs on the set of Always Decreasing Circles. "The iii of us got on extremely well," she recalls.
"Those two boys used to make each other and me express mirth all the time – it was quite hard. We used to get tickings off from people for laughing."
"And I learnt a lot from Dickie nearly playing comedy," she continues, referring to the star of The Good Life.
"Just watching him work – his timing was better than anybody's, and you had to exist a counter to that, as it were.
You learn and so much if you watch somebody who'due south meliorate than you."

She has similar praise for Maggie Smith, who she was reunited with last year for the Downton Abbey movie.
Penelope graciously calls Maggie one of her inspirations.
"When I wasa young actress starting out,I saw Maggie in everything she did at the National Theatre and wished I could exist like her," says Penelope.
"One of the main reasons I took Downton in the showtime place was to work with Maggie. We stay in touch.We're very fond of each other."
A few details are known about Penelope's individual life.Twice divorced, from the actors Daniel Massey and Sir Ian Holm, Penelope enjoys walking for exercise in London'southward parks and likes listening to the radio and podcasts.
She is devoted to her only child, Alice Massey, a theatre producer who she calls "the best thing that always happened to me", and her two grandchildren, Daniel and Ella-Rose.
"I'yard not a full-time grandmother because I'vebeen busy in the by fewyears," she admits. "But being a grandmother is wonderful. We have a great time together."
Penelope remains busier than ever with a career that shows no signs of slowing down.
She has roles in 2 upcoming Second World War movies, Summerland and Operation Mincemeat , and has no intention of retiring.
"Of class I want to continue working," says Penelope witha laugh, adding, "I don't know what else I'd do."
