The Strokes New Music Video is Great. Also, I Feel Very Old

Did you be intimate the Strokes hush up subsist? Yeah, me neither. This week, they released a parvenu music video for their new Sung "Bad Decisions." In it, the Strokes are like '70s Westworldclones and I could not be happier. They've got a new record album coming verboten in April, The New Abnormal—their outset proper instinct-length record album since 2013.  This is altogether good news show for an well-nig 39-year-antique dad. Only, the retro sci-fi vibe of the new video recording is also ugly.  When did the Strokes become a band I've cared about for twenty years? What sort of simulation am I bread and butter in?

In the class 2002, which, as cold arsenic I'm involved, was literally yesterday, my sister and I watched Julian Casablancas show up about 45 proceedings late to perform a set with the Strokes that lasted roughly 30 minutes. There was zero encore. They gaping with "New York City Cops" and closed with "End Nite." Their second album — Room on Fire — was still a year away, and the only song they played from that atomic number 3-yet-personify-released track record was "Meet Me in the Bathroom." The Strokes were mega-popular from 2001-2003, for exactly two songs — "Last Nite" and "Someday" – but their entire throwback sensuous (could a band represent the NY Dolls and Haven at the same time?) arguably trumped their literal musicianship. Yesterday, when I was young, the Strokes were a cool new lo that everybody just likeable, even if you didn't really care. Casually liking the Strokes actually ready-made you a bigger Strokes fan than serious Strokes fans. Non giving a shit was what made it all so important.

All of this is wherefore I'm having a trifle bit of a hard time with the fact that the Strokes are cathartic a new album in 2020, nearly two decades afterThis Is Itfirst made discourteous, faecal, slightly uninterested service department rock and roll seem like a revelation. I'm non saying I moved to Spic-and-span York City at 23 in the year 2005  exclusively because I wanted to lazily bump into a random Stroke in a bar and for some reason render that cool dude energy into writing face-to-face essays, but it was approximately 60 percent of that decision. These days, the most visual Stroke, Julian Casablancas is campaigning for Bernie Sanders, is a father of two, and plain, has been altogether sober for eleven years. This way, that long before I was married and had a kid, Julian was already toning things down. I'm bad well-chosen that the various Strokes appear equal usable and riant guys, who still know how to grind out superior euphony, but I'm as wel slightly disturbed by something else.

They look exactly the Lapplander as they did in 2002. To be clear, I've seen the Strokes live iii times, all before I was 35. Once in 2002, in my hometown Mesa, Arizona, at the aforementioned show with my sister, so double in New York City in 2005, and 2011, respectively. Soh, I have a good idea of what they all have looked like throughout my eventual slide into the kingdom of organism old and a dad. And, let me recount youthey are non aging at a median rate.

This is true of their music, overly, thankfully. Though galore critics hold tried terminated the years to claim, that the Strokes have really "reinvented" themselves, or successful themselves "relevant" what's indeed refreshing about "Bad Decisions" is that information technology's not trying very hard at all. Just the like the wackyTron-court in the 2005 video for "You Only Live Once," the Strokes doing the '70sVale of the Dolls/Westworld thing proves how little they've changed. The song itself also sounds look-alike it could have easily been lifted fromRoom on Fire orFirst Impressions of Earth. In other words, information technology's great without being annoying. It feels like you've heard it many times ahead, which is incisively why we every loved "Someday."

The Strokes are the exclusively banding I've been preoccupied with for 2 decades that apparently haven't changed and also seem to moil out songs that feel like they were ripped-off from some karaoke legal community that exists in my mind. Their lack of musical development, visible aging, and overall Fondle-yness is both comforting and frightening. Sure, hind end the scenes, the Strokes have families and are all situated down now. I'm the same way, but I don't have hair like Julian and I'm certainly non as fab as Fabulous.

Generally speaking, when rock stars get stale, information technology's a little embarrassing. The Strokes are — against all odds — not doing that. They're still composed As fuck, and IT seems that their secret is that they've never proved to be assuredness. Which, for men of a certain age is probably a valuable lesson. Want to be equally cool? Just stop trying.
